Thanks, in part, to a BHBC Education Grant, on March 7, 2015, a group of 58 equine enthusiasts from the Vancouver Island enjoyed a demonstration on Liberty Training for your horse. Most attendees were from the North Vancouver Island Chapter of BCHBC or other horse groups in the Comox Valley. With several people traveling in from the SVI and CVI chapters. Our clinician, Heather Nelson, started with an interesting and fun video showing herself and some of her students using her training methods with their horses. The videos were a mixture of learning and humor. Some of her farm animals even joined in! After the introductory session, we enjoyed watching Heather play at liberty with three different horses, which our Back Country members had supplied. Coincidentally, all of…

BCHBC Chapter Profile: Robson Valley
The Back Country Horsemen of BC’s Robson Valley Chapter is located in the Robson Valley, and includes the nearby communities of McBride, Valemount, Dunster, Tete Jaune, Crescent Spur and Dome Creek. The Robson Valley Chapter was founded in the spring of 2010 by a small group of avid back country riders and, over the years, has grown to approximately 30-40 members, including several youth. Members include everything from front country riders to avid multi-day back country riders. The chapter has no set days or locations for meetings, but tries to meet once a month for various events. Elections are held annually in November. The Robson Valley Chapter was started up because members saw the need for improvement of access to both the front country and back country areas of the Robson Valley, as well as exploration and re-opening of some of the historic pack trails in the area along…

NVI's New Book Celebrates Community Collaboration
After almost five years and hundreds of hours of volunteer effort, the Back Country Horsemen Society of British Columbia’s North Vancouver Island Chapter (BCHBC-NVI) have two reasons to celebrate. In early January 2015, BCHBC-NVI received notice that the Government of British Columbia had ‘officially designated’ the Salmon Brewster Equine Campsites and Trail Corridor Project located in the Sayward Valley, north of Campbell River. This designation ensures that these facilities, that were built by BCHBC, can be enjoyed by equine enthusiasts and other outdoor recreational users in perpetuity. On February 19, the volunteers gathered to celebrate that achievement and the release of a new book chronicling the project’s history. “Trail Blazers: The Creation of the Salmon Brewster Equine Campsites and Trail Corridor Project is the story of how members, who reside from Parksville to Port McNeill, engaged community and government to turn this project from a dream into reality,” said BCHBC-NVI’s…

It was established after Richard Rennison picked up the phone and made the call, and with the help and encouragement of the NW Chapter, the 20th Chapter of BCHBC came to be and the local response from the Equine Community has been and continues to be overwhelmingly supportive. Our chapter domain covers from the far North, Deese Lake area, South to Kitwanga, West thru to Terrace and Prince Rupert, South to Kitimat and North again to The Nass Valley and area. With this large Northern BC area, we have SO many trails and areas to ride from. Some of the favorite and spectacular places to ride are: Spring Creek/Deep Creek Trail. This is a beautiful forest ride, old logging roads combined with trails and small lakes, water crossings, wildlife…
